Johan Ekstedt is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for European Studies at Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). He holds a PhD in International Migration and Ethnic Relations (IMER) from Malmö University’s Department of Global Political Studies. His doctoral research focused on the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA), examining its role in shaping asylum governance within the Common European Asylum System (CEAS). His thesis included two case studies on EUAA caseworkers in the Greek asylum process, the agency’s role in developing bureaucratic tools used by national migration authorities, and its broader contribution to expanding supranationalism in EU asylum policy. Beyond his doctoral work, Ekstedt has published on Third Country Resettlement and Swedish asylum policy. His research interests also include return migration, EU asylum policy, and migration management systems.
Before entering academia, he gained first-hand experience as a migration bureaucrat, having worked for both the Swedish Migration Agency and the International Organization for Migration. He holds an MSc in Comparative Politics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Johan Ekstedt also has teaching experience in Political Science, IMER, and International Relations. His research adopts a multidisciplinary approach, integrating perspectives from political science, sociology, organizational studies, and legal studies to explore the complexities of international migration.
